This course contains six sections that will provide an overview of evidence-based reading instruction for teachers and other staff. A certificate for 3 professional development hours can be downloaded and printed following the successful completion of a quiz at the end of the course.   An enrollment key is needed to access the course.  Contact Julie Koffend, jkoffend@cntrmail.org, (224) 366-8500 to request the enrollment key.

In this course, you will learn how to:

  • Identify academic vocabulary words
  • Utilize a three-step process to teach academic vocabulary
  • Sequence practice activities to ensure students' understanding and use of academic vocabulary words
  • Raise students' awareness of vocabulary
  • Monitor students' vocabulary learning progress

The course consists of 5 modules and a required assignment. Please note that the assignment will involve teaching vocabulary in a classroom and may take two or more weeks to accomplish. All assignments are due by May 31, 2019. Once your assignment has been evaluated and approved, the Adult Learning Resource Center will email you a certificate for 5 hours of professional development.   • Increase students' awareness of vocabulary

The course consists of 4 modules and a required assignment. Please note that the assignment will involve teaching vocabulary in a classroom and may take two or more weeks to accomplish. If you are currently teaching only beginning or intermediate ESL students, you will not be able to complete the course assignment , which necessitates teaching academic vocabulary.

This course describes how to use five classroom activities to teach reading fluency. You must complete an assignment that involves teaching reading fluency to your students. All assignments are due by May 31, 2019. Once your assignment has been evaluated and approved, the Adult Learning Resource Center will email you a certificate for 3 hours of professional development. This course contains seven sections that demonstrate and provide practice in conducting diagnostic reading assessment. You must complete an assignment that involves giving  complete batteries of diagnostic reading assessments to two intermediate level readers. All assignments are due by May 31, 2019. Once your assignment has been evaluated and approved, the Adult Learning Resource Center will email you a certificate for 6 hours of professional development.
