Transitions Specialist

To begin the Transitions Pathway, an instructor must be a Preferred Instructor AND complete criteria to become either an ABE or ESL Standards Proficient Instructor.

Integrating career awareness into ALL classrooms and at ALL levels is important not only for our Illinois Adult Education Strategic Plan, but also for our students' success, motivation, and retention. Helping students understand and act on the critical link between education and careers involves goal setting, career exploration, and career planning. Continue to gain greater understanding of how to integrate career awareness into what you are already teaching by completing this module.

The Career Ready Practices component of the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) provides a framework for the developmental experiences necessary to becoming career ready. Adult education students can gain these experiences by “practicing" using many different approaches in a variety of settings. 

Each Career Ready Practice includes an overarching statement along with a more detailed description. This module covers all 12 statements.

Do you feel uncomfortable “selling” yourself or fielding unexpected questions? Does the prospect of having to meet and impress new people trigger anxiety? Interviewing for a job can be nerve-wracking. However, interviewing is a skill you can learn. With the right tips and techniques, you can become a master at sharing your value with potential employers, presenting yourself effectively at interviews, and getting the job you want.

The goal of this unit is to help participants learn a process and become familiar with what to do and what NOT to do on a job interview.

Most people will need to create and revise a resumé multiple times over the course of their professional careers. So, what are some of the essentials that make up this important document? This module section is going to highlight some of the essential components that every resumé should have.

Harvard University professor Howard Gardner's research has shown that adults possess several different ways of learning and processing information beyond the linguistic and logical abilities that teachers usually expect. In other words, there are many ways to be "smart".

The ability to understand and communicate needs and wants to others is a skill that all people need. Those who advocate for themselves are more likely to have a sense of control over their lives and feel more competent and self-confident.  Students with disabilities and adult education students require self-advocacy skills in order to successfully transition to post-secondary education and/or the workforce.

Adult education students are expected to complete many types of applications (i.e: job, post-secondary, and financial aid). It can be an intimidating process if you don't know what to expect. This section will help take the mystery out of the process.

The goal of this section is to help participants learn a process for completing applications and make a great impression.

One of the essential elements introduced in the overview of this Unit, Developing Career/Transition Plans, was Developing Career Plans. Unit C: Career Plans, will take a deeper look at the importance of a good, thorough career plan for adult education students. A variety of templates and supporting documents are available through the generous support of adult education programs in Illinois.

Developing your communication skills can help all aspects of your life, from your professional life to social gatherings and everything in between. It's never too late to work on your communication skills and by doing so improve your quality of life.

Adult education instructors have valuable information to share with their professional field but may not feel comfortable with preparing and presenting a professional development session. This unit will walk you through the steps of creating an effective training presentation from idea to execution. Use the tips provided on the Presenting an Effective Training Presentation Checklist partnered with explanation in the video to be on your way to presenting success and sharing your knowledge.
