Students with Bipolar Disorder can have a huge impact on the adult education classroom. The causes are not clearly understood, but both environmental and genetic factors play a role. There are many educational implications to consider for students with Bipolar Disorder.

This unit will provide the facts, causes, and symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and will offer some instructional strategies and accommodations to use in the classroom to improve the success of students.

An Advance Organizer is a teaching and learning tool. It is a type of graphic organizer or an organizer that is depicted visually and also explained verbally to students. Advance Organizers provide the necessary scaffolding for students to either learn new and unfamiliar material or to integrate new ideas into relatively familiar ideas.

Harvard University professor Howard Gardner's research has shown that adults possess several different ways of learning and processing information beyond the linguistic and logical abilities that teachers usually expect. In other words, there are many ways to be "smart".

Those who advocate for themselves are more likely to have a sense of control over their lives and feel more competent and self-confident.  Students with disabilities and adult education students require self-advocacy skills in order to successfully transition to post-secondary education and/or the workforce.

Research skills for adult education students can be defined as the ability to identify a problem, determine what kinds of informational resources are needed, locate those resources, evaluate the gathered information for quality and relevance, and use the information effectively to address the problem. Encouraging adult education students to develop strong research skills will prepare them to be productive problem solvers when they enter secondary education or the job market.

In this unit, participants will receive a general overview of the accommodations process for the GED®.  Specific attention will be directed at differences between the 2002 paper based GED® and 2014 computer based test with respect to accommodations (i.e. process, role of staff, practice testing). This session will explore examples of computer based testing accommodations and discuss how the new format may affect issues of access for learners. The webinar will conclude with an overview of key questions and factors for ABE programs to consider if assisting students in seeking accommodations on the GED®
